Free money at Target for the holidays! (And free food and gas at Sheetz too!)

Here's a no brainer for the holidays... today only, you can get a $200 Target Gift Card for only $185!

This is sold by GiftCardMall, who is a large reputable retailer (the same ones who are responsible for the gift card kiosks in many grocery stores, department stores, etc.), so your purchase is definitely safe.

Sweeten the deal with an extra 2% cash back by first clicking through the cash back portal Splender (and an extra $5 if it's your first purchase with Splender too).

The final math looks like this then:

Gift card value: $200
Purchase Price: $185
Cash Back 2%: (-) $3.70
Splender Sign-up Bonus: (-) $5
Final Cost: $176.40 (12% discount!)

While you're at it, pick up a $30 Sheetz gift card for $25 to fill up your gas tank and your stomach (there's a limit of 5 of these so you can get up to $150 worth!)  Don't forget to click through Splender before each transaction to get your extra 2% savings.

26 flights from 1 credit card application!

A few days ago, I promised I'd write up some details on a great limited time credit card offer that is currently out there.  This offer is particularly attractive for folks that may be just starting out, especially if you are located near a large airport that is a hub for American Airlines (i.e. Charlotte, Philadelphia, New York LaGuardia, Chicago, Miami, Dallas, etc.)

Right now, Chase is offering a significantly increased sign up bonus on their British Airways credit card.  It is a tiered bonus that is structured like this:

  • 50,000 Avios after spending $2,000 within the first 3 months of opening the account
  • 25,000 additional Avios after spending $10,000 within the first year AND
  • 25,000 additional Avios after spending $20,000 within the first year

These spend levels are cumulative, meaning that once you spend a total of $10,000 you earn the 25,000 bonus Avios, and once you spend a total of $20,000 you earn the second 25,000 bonus Avios for a total of 100,000 Avios points.  You also earn 1 Avios per dollar spent, so once you spend $20,000 you'll have earned a total of 120,000 Avios points.

This is an incredible deal.  British Airways Avios points are extremely valuable for travel on short distance flights on American Airlines.  The reason for this is that the British Airways award chart is  based solely on the distance of the flight, so all flights that are 650 miles or less in distance cost only 4,500 Avios points for an Economy ticket.  If you are flying from an American Airlines hub, there are tons of places that you can go for only 4,500 Avios.  That means that 120,000 Avios points could get you 22 one-way flights!  Flights from 651 - 1,150 miles in distance only cost 7,500 Avios each way.  This includes international flights, such as flights from New York to the Bahamas, Charlotte to many places in the Caribbean, etc.

Put in perspective, to book the same exact domestic flights using American Airlines AAdvantage Miles would cost you 12,500 miles each way, and international flights would be at least 17,500 miles each way.

In addition to short domestic hops, some other good redemption options with Avios include flights from the West Coast to Hawaii and from the East Coast to Europe.  However, the short domestic trips for 4,500 are by far some of the best redemptions out there.  And although I've not once set foot on a British Airways plane, I've redeemed over 150,000 Avios points on these 4,500 point short-haul trips for myself and my family.  Unfortunately, it's too soon for me to apply for another one of these cards or else I'd already have filled my application out...

One other great feature I forgot to initially mention is the great cancellation policy that British Airways has with their Avios reservations.  As long as you cancel at least 24 hours prior to your flight, you receive a full refund of all of your Avios, and only lose the taxes you paid on these domestic reservations (which is only $5.60 per ticket.)  So my strategy is to only book one-way tickets, and then I can essentially cancel for free... which I have done many times!

Act fast, I have a feeling that this deal won't last long!

Putting it all together - a freezing deal in the middle of summer!

This deal is so hot it's... cold?

This is a perfect example of how combining a lot of the tactics that I've written about in my previous posts can save you lots of money.  For simplicity sake, I have left off sales tax in the below example, so your actual cost and savings may vary slightly due to state sales taxes.

Take a look at this Samsung French Door Refrigerator that is on sale at The Home Depot:

At first glance, this looks like a pretty impressive deal to begin with, right?  With a regular price of $1,799 and a sale price of $998, that's an almost 45% discount already.

Now here's where the magic happens.

The first step comes from what was learned in my post on discounted gift cards.
Currently, Cardpool is selling Home Depot cards for 8% off face value.  Buying $998 of gift cards would cost you $918, saving you $80.  (Don't forget to account for any sales tax too when you buy your gift cards, since you can pay the tax at Home Depot with gift cards as well!)

To make it even easier, Cardpool has a handy "Bulk Purchase" feature which will automatically find gift cards up to a certain value for you.

The "Bulk Purchase" feature works like this:

First, find this banner on the web site.

Once you click the Bulk Purchase button, it will open a window that looks like this:

After you enter the value of gift cards that you want to purchase, you will get a result that looks something like this:

Nice and easy!

Before you click the order button at Cardpool, don't forget about using a cash back portal! Both TopCashBack and BeFrugal are currently offering 4% cash back at Cardpool.  That amounts to an additional $36.72 back on a $918 purchase from Cardpool.

Once you have your gift cards, go to the Home Depot web site to buy your refrigerator  Once again, however, don't forget to click through a cash back portal!  Both TopCashBack and BeFrugal are paying 6% back on purchases from Home Depot.  On a $998 purchase, that is an additional $59.88 back.

Time for some math.  A $1,799 refrigerator, on sale for $998.  Paid for with gift cards that you bought for $918.  Then you get a total of $96.60 in cash back from the cash back portal.  That means your net cost was only $821.40!

These same strategies can work on many other purchases and at many other retailers as well.  By paying attention to the gift card resellers and cash back portals, you can save a lot of money!

Disclosure:  Some sites pay a commission for referral.  I will always post the best deal/offer that I know of, regardless of if it pays a referral or not.  If you choose to sign up through my links for those sites, it is greatly appreciated!

Another Sams Club Membership Offer

If you missed the last offer for a Sam's Club membership, here's another opportunity to get a great discount on a membership for Sam's Club.

Zulily has two different offers for Sam's Club, a "Party Offer" and a "Back to School Offer"

Both offers cost $45, and include a one year Sam's Club Plus membership, complimentary spouse or other household member card, and a $20 gift card.  The Sam's Club plus membership normally costs $100, so combined with the $20 gift card you are already getting a $120 value for $45.

In addtion, each offer contains different Instant Savings offers.

The "Party Offer" includes a free 30-count custom cupcakes and a free 16-inch Take-n-Bake Cheese or Pepperoni pizza.

The "Back-to-School Offer" includes $10 off any name-brand kids jacket and $10 off any name-brand kids jeans.

Keep in mind this offer is for new members only.  For this offer, new members are defined as someone who is not a current member and who was not a Sam's Club member less than 6 months prior to June 21, 2015.  (If you're not sure of your renewal date, you can call (888)746-7726 to check).

So, if you've been meaning to join Sam's Club and missed out on the last offer, here's a great opportunity to join at a considerable savings with the current offer through Zulily!

To get the offer, all you have to do is go to Zulily and sign up for an account, then you should see the Sam's Club offers once you log in.

After you've first gone and signed up for your Zulily account, be sure to then go back and click through you're favorite cash back portal (the current highest paying one's for Zulily are either TopCashBack or BeFrugal) for some extra savings.

$350 Cash Back from AT&T Wireless

If you've been thinking about switching your cell phone carrier, now may be a great time to do it since TopCashBack is offering a whopping $350 cash back on new 2 year AT&T wireless contracts.

This deal certainly is not for everyone.  Personally, I'm still a fan of the prepaid plans and am sticking with my Straight Talk plan.  And it's important to note that this deal specifically excludes the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

However, if you're up for signing a new contract, then this offer from TopCashBack is definitely worth taking a look at!

In case you missed it, check out my primer on cash back portals.

Starbucks or Eight O'Clock Coffee K-Cups for only $0.25 each!!!

Here's a great deal on K-cups - Starbucks Holiday Blend or Eight O'Clock Columbian Peaks for only $0.25 each!

  1. Sign up for a new account at Choxi.com with this link to get a $10 off coupon sent to you.
  2. Click through a cash back portal to get to Choxi.com.  (it looks like SavingStar currently has the best rate for new customers at a whopping 18% cash back!  Cash back portals typically state that using coupons can invalidate any cash back, so cash back may not be earned, but it never hurts to try)
  3. Add either the Starbucks Holiday Blend 160 Count K-Cups for $49 or the Eight O'Clock Columbian Peaks 180 Count K-Cups for $56 to your cart.
  4. In your cart, enter the $10 off coupon code that you received in your email.
  5. Go here to create a password for your account and get free shipping on 1 box.
Depending on which one you order, your total price will be either $39 for the 160 count Starbucks K-Cups or $46 for the 180 count Eight O'Clock K-Cups, or roughly 25 cents each!  (If the 18% cash back from SavingStar posts, your price drops to only 20.5 cents each!)

Update: On my order, the $10 off coupon appears to invalidate the free shipping offer, so you may have to pay a $2 shipping charge.

Disclosure:  Some sites pay a commission for referral.  I will always post the best deal/offer that I know of, regardless of if it pays a referral or not.  If you choose to sign up through my links for those sites, it is greatly appreciated!

Camels... they're not just for hump day any more (or how 15 seconds can save you a bunch of money shopping on Amazon.com)

I do a lot of shopping on Amazon.com.  Now I'm going to share with you a way that you can save a LOT of money when you shop there.

Enter the camel.  Actual 3 camels.  CamelCamelCamel

CamelCamelCamel is a site that is used for tracking prices on Amazon.com.  It can be used in several ways.  When you are thinking about purchasing an item, it can be used to check that item's price history to see if the current price is a good price.  You can also set price alerts to be automatically emailed when the price drops below a set price.

CamelCamelCamel has a simple browser add-on for Chrome, FireFox, and Safari, which make using it a breeze.  When using the browser add-on, you simply click on the button from the product page on Amazon.com and get a report of the item's price history that looks like this:

From there, you can instantly create price watches with your desired price.

When the price of an item you are watching drops, you will receive an email that looks like this:

You can then click the "Buy Now" button in the email to be taken directly to the item page to buy the item if desired.

CamelCamelCamel has saved me a ton of money since I started using it.  If you shop on Amazon and aren't using this free service, it's time to start taking advantage of it now!

1,000 free American AAdvantage Miles

Here's a quick and easy way to get 1,000 American AAdvantage miles for free.  You'll also be entering for a chance to win 2 first-class tickets to anywhere American Airlines flies.  Since AAdvantage miles expire if there is no activity in your account for 18 months, it's also a way to keep your miles from expiring if you don't happen to be flying American for a while.

It's really easy, and will only take about 2 minutes to do.

  1. Go to this link now through June 15, 2015.
  2. Watch all 6 videos on the site and answer the question at the end of each video. (hint: you don't actually have to watch the video - scroll to the end of each one and just answer the question!)
  3. Fill out the form with your name and AAdvantage number.
  4. Wait for the miles to post.
1,000 miles for 2 minutes of time - great payoff!

Thanks to my buddy Shawn over at Miles to Memories for alerting me to this one!

TODAY ONLY - Sam's Club Membership for free!!!

While the Groupon offer clearly states it, I just wanted to mention that the Groupon offer is only valid for new Sam's Club members only.

Here's how to do it:
  1. Go to TopCashBack and sign up for a new account.  TopCashBack allows one account per household member, so if you already have an account, sign up your spouse, child, parent, uncle, etc...
  2. Once you've created your new account, sign in and go to this link.
  3. Click the big orange "Get Cashback Now" button to go to Groupon.  (if you use any adblock extensions or software, make sure they are turned off so your purchase tracks correctly)

Planning ahead to big savings...

In my last post, "There's a Hole in Your Pocket", I talked about how you can easily earn cash back on many of your online purchases.  In this post, I'll talk about how to save even more on many purchases, both on-line and in-store.  Advance warning, this one does require a little bit of pre-planning but can save you a ton of cash!

We've all gotten gift cards at some point (either wanted or unwanted).  Retailers love them because they are getting paid up front and many gift cards ultimately go unused.

Enter the gift card resale market.  Did you know that there are many outlets to sell your unwanted gift cards?  Which also means that outlets exist to buy someone else's unwanted gift cards, often at significant discount.  Depending on the retailer, it is often possible to get gift cards for up to 20% off their face value!

Are you a Starbucks fanatic?  How about saving an extra 10-15% off your daily caffeine fix?

Do you buy a lot of stuff at craft stores like Michaels?  Wouldn't it be nice to save an extra 25% off all your purchases there and still be able to use their coupons too?

Is it time to fix up some stuff around the house?  How about saving an extra 10% at Lowes or Home Depot?

There are multiple web sites that sell 3rd party gift cards at a discount.  Some of those sites are:

As with the cash back portals, different sites will have varying discounts depending on the merchant card you are purchasing.  The easiest way to see who has what card and at what discount available when it comes time to purchase is Gift Card Granny.  Simply go to Gift Card Granny and search for the store you need a card for.  Using Michaels as an example, there are currently 457 cards listed with an average discount of 18.4%.

So, how can you best maximize your savings?
  1. Think about where you tend to shop the most.  If there is a store that you always shop at, I recommend keeping a few gift cards on hand at all times for that store.  As you deplete your supply, reorder some more to maintain a constant supply.  I always keep gift cards for Lowes, Home Depot, and Michaels on hand.
  2. If you know you have a large purchase coming up, order discounted gift cards to pay for it.
One caveat to this is in regards to the extended warranty protection that is offered by most credit cards.  If you are buying electronics or appliances and your credit card offers extended warranty protection, make sure you weigh the value you place on the warranty protection against any savings you would get by paying with a gift card.  Many times the gift card savings has a higher ultimate value than the extended warranty protection, but this can definitely vary.

There's a hole in your pocket...

Imagine a hole in your pocket through which you lost a quarter a day.  Over the course of a year, that adds up to $91.25.  Over ten years, $912.50.  What initially seems like a small loss doesn't seem so small anymore then, does it?
When you shop online, are you automatically earning extra cash back for all of your purchases?  And I'm not talking about credit card points/cash back, but an additional percentage of cash back from a portal for making your purchase.  If you're not doing this, then it's time to fix the hole in your pocket as these savings can truly add up.
For my first official blog post, I'd like to introduce you to the wonderful world of cash back portals and show you how a few extra clicks on the keyboard before making an online purchase can add up to big savings in your pocket.
Since I first started using cash back portals 15 years ago, I've accumulated a total of over $8,600 in cash back through these methods.
The way it works is simple - before shopping online, you go to a cash back portal and click through to the merchant site from the portal.  In doing so, your purchase will be tracked and you will receive a rebate for your purchase.  Rebate percentages vary by portal and sometimes by day, and I've earned anywhere from 0.25% to 52% back on orders I've placed, along with a few special offers of 100% back on specified purchases.
Here's how you can get started.  There are two different methods you could follow - one to maximize your cash back, the other to simplify things but not always get the biggest possible payout.

Getting the Most Cash Back

The best way to truly maximize your savings, since payback rates can change on a sometimes daily basis, is as follows:

First, you need to sign up for accounts at the following sites:
Once you have your accounts established, go to CashBackMonitor and search for the retailer you are about to make a purchase from.  You should get a result that looks similar to this:

Find the highest paying site (note that occasionally one of the sites at the bottom of the list that says "up to x%" may actually be the highest paying) and click through to the portal.  Pull up the retailer on the portal site and click through to the site and then make your purchase.

A Simpler Way (but a little less savings)

Now, if this seems like too many steps, then this alternative will help simplify your strategy while still earning some of the top payouts.  All you do is sign up for TopCashBack and then go straight to TopCashBack and click through to the retailer site whenever you are shopping.  TopCashBack, as implied by their name, typically has some of the highest cash back rates out there.  Plus they have a "Highest Cash Back Guarantee" where they will match another site's rate, however you need to submit a claim for each transaction you are looking to match which can be a bit tedious.

Whichever method you choose to use, it's about time to fix that hole in your pocket...
